There’s a great little Indian restaurant on 2nd street in Long Beach that I’ve been going to since my years as a student at Cal State Long Beach. I discovered it as I was walking down 2nd Street with a good friend from community college that was visiting and I’ve been going back ever since.
Natraj is located between Covina Avenue and La Verne Avenue on 2nd Street. Parking is usually free after 8pm on 2nd Street, but there’s street parking and some paid parking lots behind the restaurant. We usually end up parking a little bit farther away, but it’s such a nice walk through these neighborhoods and their amazing homes. Not to mention, the beach is just a 10 minute walk away.
The restaurant is owned by a wonderful Indian couple that are very welcoming and nurturing to all their patrons. They are always around to see if everything is ok. There’s patio seating outside for parties of 2-4, a bar located at the back of the restaurant and the interior could accommodate large parties of 10 or more. Buffet’s are available for lunch, but I typically order off their menu.
One of my favorite things there is their Chai tea. It can be served hot or iced, and today was an iced Masala Chai kind of day.
It’s very difficult for me not to over-order when I’m at Natraj. All of their curries are amazing. It smells wonderful even before you walk in to the restaurant. On this visit, we decided to order these:
And of course… you can’t forget the Garlic Naan…
I return partially for the nostalgia, but mostly for the amazing food. It was one of those discoveries that stayed with me. I think about them every time I think about Indian food. Hope you get a chance to walk down 2nd Street so you can have an opportunity to experience some of this wonderful.
