I’ve been craving chocolate lately. It’s been cold here in Southern California, and cold weather makes me want tea… which then makes me want something sweet. Preferably something light and fluffy with chocolate icing or ganache. I like the combination of hot black tea with a little bit of whole milk, it’s nostalgic. But what makes it better is if I have a fun sweet dessert with it. I could really go for a Doughnut Vault doughnut right now…
When I decided to go to Chicago, I didn’t know how many wonderful things I was going to be able to eat out there. A friend suggested that I go to the Doughnut Vault (which I later discovered is right next door to the design building where they hold Neocon every year). It’s a tiny space that always has a line out the door, and yes… they will sell out early. Our first morning in Chicago, we got up early to stand in the Doughnut Vault line to give it a try. It was the best decision I made all week.
This tiny building with it’s blue sign feels like it’s been there for 100 years. As you step inside, you smell the amazing sweet smell of sugary raised dough. The space is small and narrow and there is just one counter at the front. It takes less than 5 minutes to get your order.
I absolutely loved their chocolate raised doughnut. Who can say no to a Chocolate glazed doughnut with chocolate sprinkles?
It’s so hard to buy just one. I have yet to find a doughnut shop that can be compared to Doughnut Vault. If someone tells me they’ve found a good doughnut, I will always respond with “Is it as good as a Doughnut Vault doughnut?”
With that said… I highly recommend getting up early for one of these fantastic doughnuts. It’s life changing.
