If you’re looking for a great little artisanal market, bakery and restaurant, stop by Farmshop inside the Brentwood Country Mart in Santa Monica, CA. The market supports a wide variety of local and regional growers and food artisans, offering everything from cured meats and cheeses to organic produce, pantry items, wine and beer. The bakery has a wide array of cookies, muffins and croissants, some of which can be found in other coffee shops in the LA area.
Their restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with a short break between 2pm – 5pm. If you happen to stroll in during this break, their bar remains open and a small charchuterie menu is available along with items at the market counter.
Farmshop makes an amazing fried chicken dinner every Sunday. It is a set menu, and the menu changes weekly. Here’s a sampling of what I had for Sunday Dinner:
Jidori Fried Chicken
Quinoa Tabbouleh Salad
heirloom tomatoes, persian cucumbers, sumac whipped fromage blanc
sweet garlic dressing, sicilian capers, gjusta breadcrumbs
housemade chimchurri, allepo spiced pepper pepitas
Unfortunately, it was too dark to take photos of my dessert. I had the Doe Madagascar Cheddar which came with dried strawberries and chocolate hazelnut marzipan.
Farmshop is a great place to go for catching up with friends or you’re looking for somewhere to celebrate a special occasion. The restaurant and market is separated by an area with communal seating, which allows for larger parties if the occasion arises. They have an open kitchen, which gives you an opportunity to see what’s coming up next in the queue. I like being there in the day because the large windows and skylights bring in so much natural light. But at night, the tables are lit with candles and the space becomes really cozy.
If you happen to be near Brentwood or Santa Monica, swing by Farmshop for a quick snack, stay for dinner, or to pick up some necessities for your next dinner party.
